Transit Visa

A Transit Visa is required for travellers passing through India on their way to a third country. It allows a stay of up to 72 hours and must be used within 15 days from the date of issue. This visa must be obtained prior to travel, as it is not available upon arrival at Indian ports of entry. Applicants are required to provide proof of confirmed onward travel to a destination outside India as part of the application process.

Follow the below steps in order to apply

  1. Create an account (Register yourself) on Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) website. Click Here to register.
  2. Fill the Govt of India's Online Visa Application Form. Click Here to access the Online Visa Application Portal.
  3. Select the REGULAR/PAPER VISA APPLICATION option. 
  4. Ensure that you select the appropriate option for the dropdown "Indian Mission/Office" as per your correct jurisdiction. To know your jurisdiction, refer to the "Jurisdiction" section.
  5. Print and sign your application.  
  6. Book your appointment online at Alankit Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) website. You can choose a convenient date and time to visit the Alankit ICAC for your application submission. Click Here to book your appointment online.  
  7. Ensure that you have your passport, photographs and all other supporting documents, exactly as per the "Documents Checklist" section. 
  8. Visit the Alankit ICAC, as per your jurisdiction. The address and location of the ICAC will be clearly mentioned in the appontment letter. 
  9. Kindly ensure you reach the ICAC 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. 
  10. Submit your application and deposit your fees at Alankit ICAC. You can check the fee for this application under the "Fee Details" section. 
  11. Enroll for Biometrics at Alankit ICAC (if required)
  12. Your application submission process is now complete! You can avail our Courier service to get your passport delivered to your doorstep!

Document Checklist

  1. Please complete the online visa application form through the official government portal, then download, print, and sign it. Ensure all details are accurate, as handwritten corrections are not allowed at the time of submission. Click here for application form.
  2. You will need to provide one recent passport-size photograph (2”x2”) that meets strict ICAO specifications.
  3. Kindly submit your original passport, which should have a minimum validity of six months from the date of application and at least two blank pages, along with a photocopy of the bio page.
  4. It is necessary to schedule an appointment online if you wish to submit your application in person. Applications sent by post or courier do not require an appointment.

Document Checklist

  1. If you have onward travel from India within 72 hours:
    • Please submit a copy of your travel itinerary, clearly showing onward travel to a third country within 72 hours of arrival into India.
    • The itinerary must also show that your port of entry and exit in India are the same.
  2. If you are applying on a Non-Australian Passport:
    • You will need to provide proof of your valid Australian visa status, such as a VEVO check, Visa Grant Notice, or visa sticker.
    • If you hold dual nationality (e.g., Australia and UK) and prefer to apply on your foreign passport, please also include a copy of your Australian passport bio page.
  3. If you are required to complete FORM-D:
    • FORM-D is required if you are a national or former national of Pakistan, Afghanistan, DPRK, Iran, China, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or if you are not a Permanent Resident in Australia.
  4. If you were previously an Indian national:
    • Please provide proof of renunciation of Indian citizenship, such as a copy of your cancelled Indian passport or, if not cancelled, submit the original passport for cancellation along with Form XXII, a recent photograph, and a copy of your foreign citizenship certificate.
    • FORM J is also needed if your appearance differs between your Indian and foreign passports.
    • If your name has changed, kindly provide a name change certificate or a statutory declaration attested by a Justice of Peace or Notary.
    • In case your Indian passport is lost, please submit a statutory declaration detailing the circumstances, along with your citizenship certificate and Form XXII.

Additional Documents for Minor Applicants (Under 18 Years)

  1. Please include a copy of the child’s birth certificate.
  2. Both parents’ current passport copies (bio page) should be provided.
  3. Kindly ensure that both parents sign the application form, or you may submit a No Objection Letter signed by both parents.
  4. If applying as a single parent or guardian, you will need to provide supporting documents, such as custody papers or the deceased parent’s death certificate.

Specific Nationality Criteria

  1. If you hold dual nationality of Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Sri Lanka, both passports must be submitted, and the visa will be issued on your home country passport.
  2. If you are an ex-national and do not hold dual nationality, you are requested to provide a statutory declaration attested by a Justice of Peace or Notary confirming you no longer hold that nationality. (For NSW residents, only Notary Public attestation is accepted.)
  3. Pakistan nationals visiting multiple cities in India are required to submit additional copies of the application based on the number of cities (four for one city, five for two cities, six for three cities).
  4. New Zealand passport holders who are Australian permanent residents must provide a copy of their Medicare card.
  5. Czech Republic passport holders may apply only if they have resided in Australia for at least one year, hold a passport valid for at least one year, and can provide proof of medical insurance for their entire stay in India.
  6. You may be requested to provide additional documents or information if required by the High Commission.

  1. Do I need a Transit Visa if I am only passing through India?
